The original
practice

Mat Pilates is where the entire pilates philosophy was born. Using nothing but your bodyweight, a mat, and your breath — it demands deep intrinsic muscle engagement that even the reformer cannot replicate. No equipment can replace the raw challenge of controlling your own body in space.

At Next Phase Pilates in Yagoona, our studio has 8 dedicated mat stations in a thoughtfully designed space that encourages focus and flow. Whether you're new to movement or a seasoned practitioner, mat class offers something profound at every level.

The Benefits

Why mat class matters

Mat pilates has been practiced for over a century for good reason — the results are undeniable and the practice is endlessly deepening.

01

True Core Mastery

Without the assistance of springs, your deep stabilisers must work harder. Mat pilates builds a level of core control that transforms every other movement in your life.

02

Flexibility & Mobility

Consistent mat practice significantly improves range of motion through the spine, hips, and shoulders — counteracting daily postural stress.

03

Mind-Body Connection

The focused, breath-centred nature of mat pilates cultivates exceptional body awareness — improving coordination, balance, and proprioception.

04

Spinal Health

Every mat class articulates and mobilises the spine through its full range of motion — reducing tension, improving posture, and supporting your vertebrae.

05

Accessible Anywhere

The skills you build in mat class travel with you. The exercises, breathing patterns, and body awareness you develop become lifelong tools.

06

Complements Everything

Mat pilates makes every other physical activity better. Our reformer clients who add mat sessions report faster progress and deeper body understanding.

Your Class Experience

What to expect

Every mat class flows through a purposeful sequence — connecting breath to movement, building heat, then restoring.

01

Centring & Breath

We begin supine, connecting to the breath and the deep abdominal wall — awakening the body before any dynamic movement begins.

02

Spinal Warm-Up

Articulation, rotation, and lateral movement through the spine to free up the joints and prepare the postural muscles.

03

Core & Full-Body Work

The heart of the class — progressive exercises through rolling, extension, side work, and standing balance that challenge the whole body.

04

Restore & Release

We close with deep stretching, spinal decompression, and a moment of stillness — leaving you open, lengthened, and renewed.

FAQs

Questions
answered

Have more questions? We'd love to help.

Is mat pilates suitable for complete beginners?
Absolutely. Mat pilates is often recommended as the best starting point. Our instructors explain every exercise clearly and offer modifications so you can work at a comfortable level from your very first class.
What's the difference between mat and reformer classes?
Mat pilates uses only your bodyweight, placing greater demand on intrinsic muscles and building exceptional mind-body awareness. The reformer adds spring resistance for greater strength challenges and support. Both are equally valuable — many clients combine both throughout the week for the best results.
Can I combine mat and reformer classes?
Yes — and we encourage it. All our weekly memberships and class packs include both mat and reformer sessions. Combining both modalities is widely considered the most comprehensive approach to pilates training.
Do I need to bring my own mat?
No — all equipment is provided at the studio. Just bring yourself, a water bottle, and grip socks (available to purchase if needed).
Is mat pilates good for back pain?
Mat pilates is widely recommended by physiotherapists and health professionals for back pain management and prevention. The focus on spinal mobility, core strength, and postural correction directly addresses many common causes of back pain. Always let your instructor know about any existing conditions.
